I will never understand this. When a woman of color decides to take control of her identity, gender, power and status in her society without necessarily conforming to western notion(s) of progress and liberation, she’s being “hostile” about maintaining the “purity” of her culture. If she decides to celebrate her race and culture, she’s being ultra-nationalist or a “purist.” But if a western woman decides to assert her autonomy with her own idea of progress, it’s normal. Why does the idea of a “universal culture” instantly apply to people of color only? I don’t buy that crud. Don’t tell me to.
